E-Invoicing Services
As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, electronic invoicing (e-invoicing) was gaining traction in India as part of the government’s efforts to digitize and streamline business processes. The implementation of e-invoicing was rolled out in phases for businesses with a certain turnover threshold. Here are some key points about e-invoicing services in India:
1. GST E-Invoicing
- The e-invoicing system in India is primarily linked to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime.
- Businesses meeting specific turnover criteria were required to generate invoices on the GST portal, and these invoices were assigned a unique Invoice Reference Number (IRN) along with a QR code.
2. Mandatory Compliance
- E-invoicing was made mandatory for businesses with an annual aggregate turnover above a certain threshold, and the threshold varied based on the financial year.
3. Invoice Registration Portal (IRP)
- The government introduced the Invoice Registration Portal (IRP), which acted as a central hub for generating and registering e-invoices. Businesses had to upload their invoice details to the IRP, and the portal then generated the unique IRN.
4. QR Code and IRN
- Each e-invoice generated through the system had a Quick Response (QR) code containing essential information. The IRN was also a crucial component to ensure the authenticity of the invoice.
5. Impact on Businesses
- Businesses needed to update their systems and processes to comply with the e-invoicing requirements. This included modifications to Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems to enable the generation and transmission of e-invoices.
6. Penalties for Non-Compliance
- Non-compliance with e-invoicing regulations could result in penalties. Therefore, businesses were encouraged to adapt to the new system to avoid legal repercussions.

It’s important to note that regulations and systems can evolve, and there may have been changes or updates to e-invoicing services in India since my last update in January 2022. For the most current and accurate information, I recommend checking with official government sources or consulting with a tax professional in India.
